  3. I agree, learning Chinese is a good idea but in my opinion the best Chinese is to learn traditional Chinese from teachers in Taiwan. Once you learn traditional Mandarin, learning simplified Mandarin becomes a lot easier as there is a reduction of strokes instead of addition of strokes. The reduction of stroke was done to encourage literacy (learning Chinese writing can be a challenge). Personally I find the traditional form more eloquent and beautiful than the simplified version.

  4. It’s called “Bystander Effect”. Basically for us in the west when we see someone in distress we automatically try to help that person. In China the mentality is “its not someone I know so why should I care” or “its not my business, so I don’t want to bother with it, let someone else deal with it”. It’s society wide apathy syndrome. Remember the case of Yueyue, the 2 year old girl who got hit by a car twice in a row because nobody bothered to help her out until she perished. In an interview with the driver, he basically said if she died, he would only pay 20,000 yuan in penalties, if she lived and is crippled he had to pay 100,000 yuan. It’s a heartless society devoid of compassion. And I agree, Taiwan is completely different, people actually care. Traditional Chinese values are intact in Taiwan while in China it is decimated and replace with extreme materialism.

  11. According to an ex-STRATFOR geopolitical analyst I have been listening in on podcast ... China will cease to exist as a sovereign state as it is in about 10 years. Just 5 years ago the analysis was the chance of China invading Taiwan is about less than 5%, today the prediction has risen to 30% so yeah... war between Taiwan/US allies and China maybe inevitable in the very near future. 30% chance of war in the Taiwan strait is pretty dire. The political calculus has drastically changed, the thinking then was "time is on our side, we will take Taiwan without firing a shot by 2050". Nowadays the political calculus is "if we don't take Taiwan now we might not have the financial and manpower to do so by 2050".

  18.  @李荣-n7s  When you say “political dynasty” it isn’t just transfer of power from father to son (that would be monarchy) but rather political power is invested upon a small circle of elite politically connected families. For example: Xi Jinping’s father is already a well connected CCP official in the 1950s although they have fallen in and out of favor with the ruling power of that time which is Mao Zedong. Almost all of the CCP high ranking members have parents that are part of the CCP bureaucracy. So they are groomed to take over their parent’s position when they grow up. It’s very rare to have a complete upstart come up from the bottom echelon. Just like warlords clans from ancient China, it is still the same. Although CCP is one party, it is comprise of different factions (or ruling families and factions each with their own interests). In a way China’s current politics still somewhat resemble the situation of the Three Kingdoms with various provinces having loyalty to one faction of “CCP warlord”. This is why they are called “princelings” in a way they are CCP bureaucratic prince.

The only difference between democracy and authoritarianism is in democracy a bad leader can be removed easily (like Trump) with minimal or no bloodshed. In authoritarianism system to remove a bad leader often requires bloodshed and revolution.

  46. These are the last decade of the CCP in power. As history have shown China's dynastic collapse tends to be slow burn and then rapidly. It will take years or even decades, those little systemic failures often adds up until a sudden rapid collapse. If you remember the Qing dynasty didn't collapse immediately in 1911. The start of the collapse took decades since the late 1800s due to systemic failures until it culminated in the Wuchang Uprising (it happened in Wuchang District in Wuhan, Hubei). There were hundreds of small revolts that were suppressed brutally by the Qing dynasty soldiers. The CCP is yet another Chinese dynasty and their downfall will be the same -- systemic and will take decades but when it finally happens it will be swift, brutal and extremely violent.

All that hunger, depredation, desperation will be inflicted upon the most vulnerable population and that are usually in the far flung rural areas. For those that aren't technically minded.. it means if you have ever copy pasted your password from let's say a Password Manager then Tiktok would have gotten your password by scanning your device's clipboard memory (where it is decrypted). It was invented in the early 1900-1920s as a way to encourage literacy as the traditional mandarine characters (often only used in official government documents) proved to be too difficult for the uneducated masses to learn. Back then only the Qing aristocracy can read and write. In 1920, China had a literally rate of only 5% (95% of the population couldn’t read or write). The Republic of China in the 1920s decided to encourage public literacy and they decided to use simplified to make it easier for the masses to get educated.

For a society to be great, it has to be open and accept criticism not cloak in shadow and oppression as well as censorship.

Condo in Shanghai now cost 3M RMB while pay only 8,000 RMB per month for regular workers. It will take decades just to do the downpayment. No freedom, no housing, no marriage, no children, can’t even loudly complain to CCP that is why 躺平 happens.

What is funny is the more Xi tries to act tough in international diolomacy the more people turns towards and cooperate with the west. It took 10 years to negotiate RCEP, Xi foreign policy torpedo it in just 1 year. BRI spent already $400 billion but 30% of projects already failed. Xi is good at one thing, make grandiose plan and promises and waste China's money and resources for nothing. For example, he spent billions building new city but few people live there because there are no jobs. The buildings and empty apartment are all just rotting away. You cannot build a city just full of buildings but no people. I can go on and on about why the CCP under Xi is a failure but it doesn't matter. How you want to make your country like is up to you. Too much trust and blind belief in CCP is just stupid. Many top level CCP members don't even believe in the CCP.

  105.  @fantasy9917  True. In a totalitarian society where the government controls all flow of information the government bureaucrats themselves may become the biggest victims of that censorship. Especially in a strong man autocracy where the leader is especially hostile to negative news like Xi. Basically their censorship bubble is so thick they may start to believe in their own lies and this leads to severe missteps since nobody is giving honest feedback or contradicting information than the narrative put out by those in charge. For example the coal shortage last year -- from what I heard it started in August 2021 but Xi didn't became aware of it until the end of October 2021 because nobody dares to bring him the bad news until the situation has become dire.

And yes the “Mandate of Heaven”. All Chinese dynasties which has ended is due to losing the Mandate of Heaven and the inability to control floods in China which causes famine, poverty, and hardship to untold millions and which contributes to political instability and the collapse of the regime. Most pro-democracy protesters are millennials or composed of the XYZ generation while most of the pro-Beijing supporters are the boomers and the forgotten generation. This is a generational war compounded by the massive income inequality between the boomers and the millennials. It a war between the rich and the poor. This isn’t just in China but happening in the US and elsewhere too.

And sadly it is effective in diverting all that attention away from its myriad of internal problems. That’s what authoritarian regime does whenever it’s leaders encounters a problem it cannot easily resolve — blame foreign forces. The CCP can do all the propaganda they want but the fact remains unemployment in China right now is over 100M out of jobs (especially the migrant workers coming from the rural areas) due to domestic consumption slowdown and US economic slowdown. They have 8 million college students graduating this year and half of those will be jobless. This is why the CCP is going all in with the propaganda. The CCP is feeling very very vulnerable right now and people are starting to get pissed at the broken social contract between the people and the government. In March-April 2020 alone there were over 50 incidents of laborer protest inside China involving thousands of people but nobody is paying attention to it. This exposes the vulnerabilities of society when the government (it doesn’t matter whether democratic or authoritarian) is dominated by plutocrats while the working class suffers. It doesn’t mean it’s peachy here in the US. 33 million Americans are now jobless. Same pattern of weaknesses when governments rely too much on billionaires or state owned enterprises to create jobs. The key to a stable economy is a balance between small businesses and big businesses but recent years big businesses has dominated practically everything due to government lobbying. I have been hearing reports of factory owners in China who absconded and disappeared with all the company's money overnight while leaving all the workers without any compensation or any recourse (socialism despite being touted by the CCP as a feature is barely functional -- in fact US socialism is more generous than China). Situation in China is indeed pretty dire, one factory owner even burned down his own factory in order to try to claim insurance (and this is of course insurance fraud not to mention arson). And yes there is a victim here, the Chinese people are victims of their own un-elected government that is dominated by plutocrats. Do you think the billionaire ruling elites care ? They are now living comfortably in quarantine inside their 10 million dollar mansion while driving their Jaguars and Maseratis and drinking mai tais by the poolside while you worker grunts can skip a meal or go without eating just to save rent money.
