One thing that is a small issue to some is that the EU doesn't allow some herbal medicines which to me is anti-freedom. For example, one is not allowed to have Melatonin which is a substance that helps me sleep. Again, this over the counter in the USA and most other countries around the world. This is just one instance.

@christopherhouse7937 They can tax on world wide income unlike most territorial based tax countries.

Residency is easier there if one is a Eu citizen.

@ahwhodat Yes, but the topic keeps being raised, so wouldn;t get too comfortable there.

@Rui Lima Thanks for your comment. For me being part of the Eu has more downsides than upsides since I' have always been self employed. Central Portugal seems to have reasonable real estate but I imagine economic activities are limited. Since I'm self employed as long as I have internet connection, I can live anywhere. Following some sites on FB, there is definitely some push back from the local population against come of the global digital nomads who were attracted to Portugal for reduced taxation for a period of time. My point is the handwriting is on the wall, so not to get too comfortable with being a resident there.

@RK-cj4oc I have an autoimmune condition & per others who live in the EU they aren't allowed to get melatonin. Perhaps there's a work around but the EU doesn't allow many herbal medicines. I've seen interviews with people in Spain who aren't allowed to grow certain medicinal herbs.
