Kids are expensive. Definitely if they have to go to school, after school, pre school, activities, etc. The days that you have 7 kids and three of them died, so you had four left to farm, are long over. As expectations of society and the kids rose, so did the cost. At this point, in china, you expect your kid to leave university with five degrees, all top of the class. After all it is their future, and secretly yours as your kids will become your living pension.
