OK, none of this was in the video, so it's up to me to tell you.
On the outskirts of slab city is Paradise Mountain. Built out of dirt, hay and acrlilic paint by a devout Christian, it is wacky and beautiul and is now considered folk art. The guy who built it had a sroke and can't talk, but still lives out there with help from his friends.
Inside slab city is a cafe and theatre of sorts. They have seats that don't match, and they sell coffee for a quarter if you bring your own cup. They have talent shows, a statue/grave marker of a popular local singer, and special themed events such as a "prom." The guy who runs it was formerly homeless and was sick of the harrasment, so he moved to slap city.
The next guy I saw ran a garage sale, selling kerosene lambs and machine parts and such.
There was laundry drying out on the slabs.
In short, this is a society, and creative people live and do things here. It's not all meth labs.
