It was called the Spanish Flu only because during WWI Spain was the first country to report extensively on that pandemic. But by the time it reached Spain, it had already extracted a deadly toll in America and many other European nations. Because of the war, America and other countries involved downplayed the disease, because they did not wish to signal any weakness. That downplaying of the Spanish Flu taught a very costly lesson, a lesson which Trump and Republicans have unfortunately refused to learn from, and which has once again proven very costly when repeating past mistakes. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." ~ George Santayana "History doesn't repeat itself. But it does rhyme. ~ Mark Twain "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history." ~ Aldous Huxley "If men could learn from history, what lessons it might teach us! But passion and party blind our eyes, and the light which experience gives us is a lantern on the stern which shines only on the waves behind." ~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Reassuring news (so far) with the Omicron variant. While reportedly more contagious than even measles, it appears this new variant could be less severe. Plus, indications are that current vaccinations still have some effectiveness against this new variant. Also, vaccine manufacturers are already working on a new vaccine designed for the Omicron variant, just in case it should be needed, which could be ready in as little as three months. Still, the continuing emergence of new Covid-19 variants underscores the importance of getting everyone around the world vaccinated.
