  4.  @westberryjim  ~ Beginning to think that President Biden needs to declare martial law to get Covid-19 under control. It's appalling and sad that it's gotten to this point because of a bunch of anti-science morons lacking basic decency and even a modicum of common sense. In a sane America----one where a third of the population wasn't programmed into a mindless, fascist Republican cult----we would have universal Covid-19 vaccine passports, masks and social distancing required wherever and whenever deemed necessary by public health officials, and mandatory vaccinations for all those able to receive it. Actually, in a sane America, none of that would be necessary, because everyone able would be voluntarily getting vaccinated, and everybody would be faithfully following CDC guidelines like wearing masks and socially distancing. They would be doing so because it is in there own best interest; because it is the moral and ethical thing to do to protect our fellow citizens; because we need to prevent the creation of new, more deadly variants; because it is the best way to recover the economy; because it is the best way to get things back to normal; because it is the civic, patriotic thing to do; and because it is just plain old-fashioned common sense.

  8.  @westberryjim  ~ There's freedom...and then there's free DUMB. There's a critical distinction that needs to be made between the two. It is not unusual to have martial law put into place and drastic measures taken to force citizen's compliance with measures to insure the security of America and Americans when threatened by war. Well, we are at war now, with the security of America and Americans threatened----not against any foreign power, but against a deadly global pandemic. This is a special situation that needs to be taken seriously, and the freedoms asked to be sacrificed would only be temporary, in the interests of the common collective good. Of course, those with medical conditions unable to get the vaccine should not be forced to do so. And there are ways of mandating vaccines that impose restrictions as a way of encouraging rather than forcing people to get them. The same with wearing masks and other CDC guidelines. People want to refuse to wear masks, they can stay at home, or face stiff penalties for endangering public health. As pointed out in my previous reply, in a sane America none of that should be necessary, because virtually all citizens would want to do their part. However, we must face and deal with the reality that America is suffering from a sickness greater than Covid-19 presently, which is the willful ignorance of a fascist Republican cult. Freedoms can exist only up to the point they infringe upon the freedom of others. Religious tolerance can be practiced only up to the point it becomes intolerant of others. Our Constitution is a secular document, not a religious one, and it was certainly never intended to be a suicidal death pact. Getting vaccinated and following CDC guidelines brings freedom from preventable illness or injury, and a senseless premature death, but the mindless fascist Republican cult only believes in freeDUMB. Just as they don't understand or would deny the Constitution is as much about the common good as personal liberties, and that those two things are intrinsically and inextricably intertwined. They are also sorely lacking in common sense, something else about which Mr. Franklin was quite keen. Mr. Franklin was also one our nation's first scientists--yet these modern-day knuckleheads who ought know better refute science! Were he alive today, he would be rather dismayed, disgruntled, and disgusted with the fascist anti-science Republican cult, that much is crystal clear.
