The only US President in the last 100 years not to declare a war. He said that was his proudest achievement. A great figure, unfairly maligned by right wing propaganda for weakness in the face of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.The Carter administration did increase defence spending and took sanctions against the Soviets as well as cancelling SALT 2 which otherwise would have been ratified. Reagan was able to portray him as weak as he positioned himself as a hard-line Cold War anti-communist. I regret not buying tickets to see him at the Hay Festival in the UK just over a decade ago as it would have been a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a US President speak. Some I would not want to hear speak, of course. The tickets were £50 each which, at the time, I thought was too expensive. The Reagan era was a disaster for America and the world, the consequences of which we are still suffering today in myriad ways.
