  3. I have always taken notice of what Peter Hitchens has to say. Along with David Starkey they are two of the very few who have consistently and openly made it clear about the state of British politics. From the left, Claire Fox is probably about the only one who talks any sense. There are new parties forming but it is a splinter effect which could actually hand control back to labour. Starmer is even more extreme than Johnson so as with brexit, we can't look to parliament for help beyond a small group of back bench rebels incapable of halting this steady march of emergency regulations. This seems to me like the end of an era. Guy Fawkes may as well have succeeded. Overall we have abused our own freedom by taking it for granted and the weasels were busying away all the time. The pivotal moment for me was the masks. This was a way for the government to gauge just how much we are prepared to believe without questioning. Not only did people conform, many have turned it into the latest fashion and even if you point out how damaging to their health these things can be it is like you have deeply offended and wounded them. Some are already taking it upon themselves to order that we all wear them. On balance I think Peter's stance of saying 'it is finished' is probably the most likely to wake people up. It is going to look scarier and scarier in town centres over the coming months. Who knows what authoritarian presence there will be, more police, military vehicles patrolling - if you want to know how that feels just ask somebody who lived in or close to Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles. There will be more and more empty shops. And the lefties too will miss some of their favourites and no doubt protest the loudest - the irony completely lost on them. But don't worry, the bars will still be open in parliament when alcohol has been prohibited.
