  1. As one of those people who used to hate Rust (for no particular reason I might add), I'm now a convert. C/C++ are still great for teaching, but no longer belong in critical production software, and you could certainly argue in any production software in general. The diehard C/C++ crowd will wake up one day and realize that the industry has passed them by. Only then will they say, I was wrong, Rust isn't just a fad.

  2. I think ultimately, AI will lead to stagnation and ultimately decline in creativity and development because AI cannot truly generate anything new, only recompile that which already exists. But of course by the time that realization sets in and its effects are felt, most everyone will be jobless.

I've recently begun exploring functional programming with OCaml, and I really love the functional paradigm and the thought process of functional programmers. For me it's very concrete and easy to grasp. Being on the low end of an intermediate programmer, I think this is also why a lot of people start to learn programming but never stick with it. They probably saw a Python tutorial and so started to learn Python OOP, when their thought process and comfort could be more aligned with the functional paradigm. That's why I always encourage new programmers to take a survey of languages course to find what language and paradigm best suits them.

On the flip side and quite ironically, Raspberry Pi's own decision to exclusively supply industry and abandon hobbyists has broken their own near-monopoly in the maker space. A great thing indeed!!!

  15. Microsoft has been exploring Rust for a few years, although it's encouraging to see some movement on this front. MS is also hiring devs to port C++ libraries and large code bases to Rust. From what I've been able to gather, there's a lot going on with Rust at MS, perhaps more than is actually being reported. I think at this point it's safe to say Rust is the new C/C++ for the 21st century.

Any good business person knows you never hitch the success of your company on someone else's product, because then you're in their pocket on wholly reliant on them. From what I know of the way business and industry operates, software engineers will be around for a very long time.

  27. Well around 70% of exploits are related to memory. That's why it's the main concern. In C/C++ specifically, it's very easy for memory bugs to creep into the code because of manual memory management. Garbage-collected languages don't have these same issues, such as C# and Go. And with Rust, although it's not garbage collected, does enforce safe memory management with its built-in features.

  34. Your reasoning is very strange. There is NO instance where it's permissible to drive over the legal limit. If you're in a club or a bar and are drinking and have to flee, guess what, you have to flee on foot. That's not an excuse to drive drunk. If your wife is in labor, you call an ambulance. That's not an excuse to drive drink. And sorry, but a cop will arrest you for that, and probably also charge you with some type of endangerment charge for driving drunk with your pregnant wife. This doesn't mean I support this technology, just that drinking alcohol is a personal choice, and just because you've made that choice doesn't mean there are exceptions (driving) in the case of an emergency.

Those specific vulnerabilities are not inherent to micro kernels in general, but rather to Intel's implementation and modification of the code. It is specific to Intel's IME. You're the one who thinks that specific vulnerability apparently disproves microkernels are not as safe as monolithic kernels, when it's not even related to kernel architecture. It's the common talking point people make to think they're making a point but instead prove they don't know what they're talking about. Furthermore, just for the sake of the discussion, let's just say this one security vulnerability were related inherently to microkernel design. That's still just one cherry-picked example that in no way outweighs the fact that for every one flaw in a microkernel, you could find a hundred or more in a monolithic kernel.

  38. Rust has a higher-than-average barrier to entry and generally requires a higher-than-average developer knowledge. Plus the fact that it's not necessarily a mature language and has use cases that are better supported than others. All this to say Rust should be used when necessary, but sparingly. Where another language like Go is more appropriate, it should be used. In short, Rust is not the end all, be all.

I would say people who start with C or a similar lower-level language understand programming much better than people who start with very abstracted, garbage-collected languages.

  41. The functional paradigm promotes much better safety than imperative. Scala, OCaml and Scheme (Lisp) would be much better than Rust, as they're also memory safe and garbage collected. Sounds like these "experts" just want to promote Rust because it has such a loud community.

  44. I have the exact same book right here next to me. Yes, continue learning C++. It is without a doubt the best low-level teaching language. At least learn the fundamentals of manual memory management. Every single Rust developer that I have talked to personally encouraged me to learn C or C++ first before learning Rust. It's the only way you can fully appreciate and understand all of the problems Rust is trying to solve. Plus, there will be a lot of good-paying jobs over the next 20 to 30 years porting C++ to Rust.

While you don't necessarily need a microkernel for standard desktop operating systems, although I personally much prefer them (for example the L4), the standard consensus among operating system engineers is that microkernels are far superior to monolithic kernels for security and fault tolerance. So while you won't see a Debian Mint or Arch Linux distribution with a microkernel, they are commonly used in critical systems infrastructure such as hospital operating rooms, commercial aircraft and power grids. And btw, GNU Hurd is and always has been developed by only a few volunteers in their spare time.

  58. It's really refreshing to see a more critical review. I was very skeptical of this from the beginning. I think the videos turned out exactly as they were designed, an attempt to tear down Linux. It seemed as though Linus and Luke were already familiar with these so-called "problems" and recreated them for the video on purpose. The target audience isn't meant to be Linux users and the free and open source community, but rather the Windows and proprietary community to attempt to dissuade them from "making the switch", that is to Linux, something that is becoming increasingly more popular among the tech crowd.

  62.  @GafftheHorse  I mentioned the init system bc I mentioned Artix, which is basically Arch. Honestly though, I've been using Void for a while now and couldn't be happier. I really think you should give it a try. Every Void user I'm aware of is very pleased. I've yet to encounter any issues whatsoever. It runs absolutely flawlessly, especially with the Suckless tools.

  63.  @GafftheHorse  Ever considered Manjaro? It's basically Arch but just way more stable. Or Debian testing. I have been running it in a VM for a couple of weeks and it's great. It's the stability of Debian with a newer kernel and software. Arch is on kernel 6.3 right now and Debian Bookworm is on 6.1. It's not bleeding-edge like Arch but definitely has the stability you're looking for.

  64.  @GafftheHorse  Well the next release of Debian is next month, so you'd be making the switch at a really good time. That's when Bookworm goes from testing to stable, but the commits are frozen right now in preparation for its release. So while it's officially still testing, it's stable. To be honest, I'm actually considering switching back. Debian is the original distro I learned Linux on. I also mess around with the BSDs from time to time, as well as Qubes. But honestly, there's no reason to run that as a daily driver.

  65.  @GafftheHorse  I've heard very similar things from others who want to switch full-time but can't bc of a particular piece of Windows software. They obviously run Wine like you, but they have all said it's not perfect. If you did want to move to Linux completely on your personal PC, you could always set up a Windows desktop in the cloud for a few bucks a month. Or you could dual boot, but a lot of people find that to be a hassle.

  67. The Dvorak layout is both more ergonomic and faster than the qwerty, even in a split design. The qwerty layout was designed specifically for typewriters with only one function in mind, to prevent mechanical malfunctions while typing. Dvorak designed a more ergonomic layout that is not only faster, but also more comfortable. Now combine this with a split design, and there's absolutely no comparison with a qwerty.

  70. In order to understand memory safety, you have to understand manual memory management. Almost every Rust developer I've seen recommends learning C/C++ before Rust so that you can properly understand the issues Rust is trying to solve. So C/C++ will probably become deprecated in industry software development at some point, but will always be useful as learning tools.

  74. This has to be one of the most uneducated rants I've ever heard about OpenBSD. The developers of HardenedBSD have only a fraction of the knowledge and experience of Theo de Raadt and the team at OpenBSD when it comes to clean and secure code, cryptography, and security. OpenBSD regularly changes the entire standard of software, for example with openSSH, libreSSL and httpd, just to name a few. Name anything remotely similar HardenedBSD has done. There aren't any. While I fully support the HardenedBSD project, in many respects they're basically on life support. And TrustedBSD isn't an operating system, but rather an entity that provides security mitigations for FreeBSD, which, I might add, don't even come close to the security mitigations of OpenBSD.

  79. Linus Torvalds isn't Richard Stallman. Translation = Linux is not entirely FOSS, except in a few rare distros that can be found on the FSF website. I understood this before I even installed my first Linux distro. Part of the problem is that it's near impossible to write code for hardware because it's proprietary. But also, people expect everyone else to write the code and aren't willing to contribute themselves. Hence, people shouldn't complain unless they're willing to contribute.
