Counsellor, I was divorced in the Commonwealth of VA in 2017. My attorney stated that I "had" to pay alimony, and I asked, "what are the Virginia laws or formula that determine alimony"? She said there are none, and so I said I won't pay any alimony then! To which she responded, :there are no laws but in VA it's accepted tradition, and if you don't agree on a sum, the court will impose alimony on you and it will be onerous." We negotiated five years of spousal support and I only have 20 months left until my emancipation!
