I never understood why the U.K went as far as building commonwealth only to abandon it for the European Union. Right now the U.K would have been the biggest economy in the world with a reliable market that shares some of its culture. Most of the commonwealth countries still maintained a positive relationship with the U.K even after the issue of colonization. But the U.K was shortsighted by taking the easiest route to economic development by joining the E.U (an already flourishing market where the U.K had less leverage as compared developing economies where leverage was high).
