Missing a trick here GBNews. The Conservative party was founded in Tamworth in 1834. Just after we abolished slavery.

@stephenjon3502 Slavery has existed for millennia. The transatlantic trade was started in 1530 by the Portuguese and Spanish. The first English ships to transport slaves did so in 1664. The British didn't shackle slaves ,Africans did. British ships transported them to the USA and Caribbean. No compensation went to US owners. We did however stamp out the trade worldwide. Finally stopping the Portuguese in 1866 and Nigerians in 1895.

@avid8921 The transatlantic slave trade was started by the Portuguese in 1530. The first slaves in Jamaica were taken by the Spanish and then the Dutch. The first people taken to the Caribbean by the English were Irish Catholics around 1648.

@stephenjon3502 The British only colonised the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. We took no slaves from there. Most slaves came from West Africa. Our first West African colonies arose after the slave trade was abolished. Ghana 1874, Nigeria 1884, Gambia 1888, Cameroon 1918. We had a small presence in Sierra Leone from 1809 in order to enforce slave trade abolition. Have you not read many books?
