How does working four days a week make anyone lazy? Who knows what they're doing on their extra day off? Raising their children, helping their parents, volunteering, exercising

It shares work out more fairly. Each works 32 hours instead of 40. You need 25% more workers to cover a 24/7 business.

Very much so. The idea was promoted by the philosopher Bertrand Russell in the 1930s. In his books the Conquest of Happiness and in Praise of Idleness. He believed that true progress lay in affording citizens more leisure and family time. Computers and automation means we have constantly been promised such time gains since the early 1980s, but the mean minded puritanism of neo-liberal experiment has blocked it in favour of greater accretions of excess wealth for the 1%.

How is the shift length relevant. Four on, four off is 50:50. Half a week.

42 hours in 12 hour shifts is 3.5 days.
