Imagine this: woman cheats on husband. Woman then regrets and files a rape report. If she has to describe her assailant, she gives a random description. However, descriptions are often not random, as the brain can register faces she sees in public. She constructs a visage based on facial features her brain has unconsciously registered, and describes it to the police. The police creates a portrait based on her description, then they start searching for the man with that face. They can put up wanted posters, and walk around with portrait in hand, asking around the community. Someone may associate the portrait to John, a man they know, and they ask the officer what happened. There is a good chance that the officer will divulge the reason for looking for that man. Then the word spreads around the community that John is wanted for rape.
Even if this is not true, humans almost always go for the "there's no smoke without fire" mentality, and John will always be looked at with suspicion, especially of John is seen as a weirdo, even if he is actually harmless. This can also be a pretext for others to harm John, just because they find him weird and he was suspected of rape, even if completely false. I (and I am convinced that a lot of you) know plenty of cases in which guys have been killed just because they'd been confused with someone else.
