  1. You are correct. The comparison was a false dichotomy, a logical fallacy. Those birds killed by the large windmills can potentially eat small cats, as well as dogs for that matter, especially dead ones.

  2. Strong winds will damage turbines, so energy is often used to slow the turbines as the wind gets increasingly stronger. Micro turbines, by the shore, often are damaged & need repairs due to strong winds.

  3. The potential is there. Decentralized power production is common in the Third World and War Zones. People like the convenience of centralized power, as they like the convenience of centralized anything (A/C, Government, etc.) — until it breaks down and things decentralize again.

  6. It is illegal to kill raptors and the US National bird. Such birds are often endangered and are killed by some of today’s wind turbines. Outdoor cats are not killing these types of endangered birds, which target rodents, and clean up dead rodents infected with diseases like bubonic plague. Comparing the two distinct & important problems is a false dichotomy. Windmill also cause significant regional warming… raising surface temperatures by measurable quantities, much the same way urban areas do. Small Windmills at the shore, where wind is always blowing, breaks small wind turbines fairly quickly, as demonstrated in public parks, where they are often down & under maintenance as often as they are working. Windmills also require energy to heat them during freezing temperatures, to keep them safe & usable. Power lines to locations where large scale wind can be leveraged, don’t exist today, to leverage energy generation that we need to implement today. Power traversing over power lines is lost via resistance, creating heat, ironically contributing to regional warming. At home wind power is absolutely a technology to leverage, since those power lines exist, and localized energy production & consumption should reduce the heat generation due to energy traversing long distances. We need to harness wind technology, the same way we need to harness all energy. Energy is dirty, all energy is dirty. Minimizing and ignoring the negative impacts is not helping us solve the real problems of our energy needs in our biosphere.

The potential of wind blowing 24x7 vs solar (making energy only during the day, made with heavy metals, requiring batteries to fill up landfills, requiring the strip mining of Africa to meet international demand, and poised to be a hazardous waste disposal nightmare in 30 years) is far more sustainable. I would love a vertical wind turbine, since people would not know what they are on a house, since they look something like a slightly taller Turtle Fan, for venting an attic. Designed right, it could be an attack fan that generated electricity. Inefficient is still a win, since it would generate electricity.

  8. More efficient… every household… little power generator? Not really. Small generators are very inefficient. Large generators, which are always running, create massive quantities of heat, which burns fuel much more completely, resulting in very clean air, and much better use of fuels. Grid tied small wind turbines & solar cells have a lot of potential, if a neighborhood could be configured with a generator system to keep the grid up when central power goes.
