Because of energy density and lack of natural resources for complete electrification today. First, energy. Diesel motor fuel = 38,290 kJ/liter. A truck typically hold 120–150 gallons. The number of batteries for that, plus the time it would take to replenish the energy between job site runs, makes pure EV solution uncompetitive at this point in time. Second, natural resources. To completely electrify vehicles on the islands of the UK, 100% of worldwide copper production [for 1 year] would be consumed. There are a lot of trucks out there, across Canada! 😅

@ - - “Hydrogen is hype” Hydrogen has been used in vehicles for years, the spaces were limited. Regulators slowed the adoption of Hydrogen, by stonewalling the regulatory permitting requirements on a national level — at least in the US. “If load is somewhat constant…” As it turns out, hydrogen is the fuel of choice for forklifts in Walmart & Amazon. The load on the system is variable, stop & go, lift & lower, full & empty. It is also clean, in comparison to a hybrid. Imagine if every Walmart & Amazon became a hydrogen refueling location… if the regulators would allow it.

Hydrogen offers 120 megajoules per kilogram (MJ/kg) and has a significantly higher energy content to other fuels like gasoline or diesel. For trucks, this means hydrogen will make trucking more efficient, plus provide for a complete electrification stack, plus be 100% clean with H2O emissions, plus full up quickly (vs charging slowly or degrading batteries via fast charge.) The hot swappable H2 fuel canisters (similar to the larger propane gas bottles for grills at grocery store around your neighborhood) can eliminate the fill up station problem that current Hydrogen & EV technologies have today. Just put the hot swappable H2 bottles next to propane tanks at local gas stations, grocery stores, etc. and H2 trucks will be ready to go! Right now, clean H2 is not on anyone’s radar, and that is a huge problem for the world. The issue with moving to Hydrogen has been regulation issues at the federal government level, not technology. Buying batteries & battery precursors from China is a lot more profitable for politicians than people producing energy domestically in every nation around the world (nearly every nation has water.)

It is a good deal… every incremental change is good! More diesel trucks need to be hybrid & hydrogen enhanced. Emissions can be greatly reduced by just injecting a little hydrogen (via electrolysis of water in real time) into the diesel engine…. and making a diesel truck more of a hybrid will reduce fuel consumption & emissions. Honestly, there is so much benefit to the world, and it can be done right now!
