  1. 8:40 - “how did it do it? What policy measures?” There were multiple large semiconductor industries in Taiwan, all went to the government for loans to upgrade their foundries. Taiwan would grant a massive loan to only one company, which forced a massive merger. This is when TSMC became truly viable with cutting edge technology.

  2.  @chiaminhsu218  - “The Taiwanese government has not encouraged TSMC to merge…” TSMC is an amazing company, fulfilling a niche which enabled it to shine! Taiwan’s National Development Fund spends billions in T$ to encourage mergers & strengthen it’s industrial & technological base. There is nothing wrong with that, just go back 9 years to see similar statements in the news. Acquiring capital is critical for businesses. Foundries need capital that supersede the GDP of nations, it is just the way it is. It is more than money, there is also vision… and when the two are together with appropriate government policy so appropriate skill can be acquired - great things occur!
