@billballbuster7186 Nain armies than what were they fielding in the islands? They were nothing since they fought to the death as well. The US also had troops in Burma.

@billballbuster7186 I doubt it, they were hungry for empire. They started in 1931 nobody supported them other than the fascist.

@billballbuster7186 yeah but Iwo Jima is also a tiny island. Much small that any place in Europe where the war was fought let that sink in.

@billballbuster7186 Yeah and both were won they were important to getting closer to the Japanese home islands to start the bombing campaign. More Americans died in Europe than any other WW2 theater. Mind that when we are talking about Europe, we are talking about 2 major invasions (Italy and France) and almost half a dozen air campaigns. The European theater was much bigger in scope than the island hopping campaigns of the South Pacific or the jungle warfare of the CBI theater. More Americans died there simply because the forces on each side were significantly larger. If you had asked which theater contained more brutal fighting…I'd vote the Pacific hands down. By the casualty rates alone of the units involved, in general the Pacific War was a truly gruesome war of attrition. German units would usually surrender when surrounded or out of ammunition….the Japanese fought to the man almost without exception.
