You can bet your boots that Taiwan has an air defense system that is concealed and could be used against naval targets as well. It is also likely that they have more discreet short take off run ways that can enable them to get air assets into play. If China throws the kitchen sink at Taiwan it will come out on top but the use of resources would be extreme.

@johnm7267 So if that is the case then why have they not unified and why is there not a culture in Taiwan of wanting to join with China?

@johnm7267 Lots of countries have ferry systems to other countries. Some countries even have bridges built connecting them.

The only factor people seem to be underestimating is the size of the Chinese force that could attempt an invasion.

@Crugroth Tunneling was used in WW1 and it was routine enough that both German and British tunnellers would run into one other and have shootouts or that one side would accidently run into another's tunnel and then perform a clandestine infiltration of their system. In medieval times they used to tunnel under defensive walls around cities to try and break in. A tunnel system under an ocean that needs to be 100 miles long is a lot more complex.
