@FlashMustache there are different reasons why one might choose HVDC. Minimizing losses over long distances is one popular reason. Asfor the UK, you said it yourself: the grids are not synchronized so they need to convert the electricity to DC and back. Another example is the Brazil-Argentina interconnect, which not only has unsynchronized grids but also different grid frequencies. In this case the DC portion only exists in the substation, a so called back to back DC substation.
