I remember years ago hearing an F1 engineer saying that they found that using the standard F1 formulation of petrol (which is supposedly the "same" as at the pump) the ideal displacement of a single cylinder was 250cc to 300cc, and that it didn't really change with different numbers of pistons, diameter, or stroke. If we use that and the natural balance of engines then a 1.5L straight 6 should be the most efficient engine, but nobody has made one that I know of. Someone with too much money please take a 1.2L sport bike engine and graft on 2 more pistons :)
