  3. In the case of ASL, that's because Thomas Gallaudet, who opened the first school for the Deaf in the US, learned educational methods and sign language from Laurent Clerc, a French Deaf teacher. Gallaudet did approach British educators of the deaf first, but for some reason I can't remember, they didn't want to share with him, so he went to France instead.
