  1. It all goes back to when Tony Blair arbitrarily decided that "...50% of school leavers must go on to further education..." for no better reason than 50% is a nice, round number. The inevitable (and easily predictable) results were: 1) No further government financial support of students was possible due to the vast increase in expenditure this would incur, essentially turning further education into a self-funded endeavour. 2) Because they were self-funding, students now felt they had a right to demand that they get a good degree regardless of how much effort they put into it. 3) Dumbing down of A-levels to make sure that the less able kids could get the grades they needed to make the number up to 50%. 4) Dumbing down of degree content to cater for the influx of less able kids. 5) Universities essentially became "for profit" organisations and so were force to think up all manner of bizarre, pointless and absurd degrees to tempt the punters in. The overall result is that Britain's further education system has been transformed from the envy of the world to an international laughing-stock in under 30 years. Thanks Tony.
