  1. From a European politician perspective I think that what the french government is afraid of is Instability causing famines. They are afraid that mass migration from north Africa will cause political problems in Europe. Then they loose re-election. Sure protecting interest in the mine is part of it but I think the bigger fear is political fallout from regional instability. The French, Nigeria , ecowas and USA are trying to figure out the least bad option individually.

  3. The French should take the former president Bazoum and his family with them. I think Macron is friends with the former president and its personal. In return Bazoum resigns and France finds somewhere else to put its troops. The coup leaders may not have been elected but they do seem to have control of the country and military.
