Was Chauchat the cheapest possible MG to produce though? I know that there were other attempts to lower prices like Bespal(can't recall proper name), but were there ACTUAL last ditch machineguns?

@MarvinCZ and how exactly does WWII disqualifies it? Not to mention that they've failed to lower prices with it. My question was about cheapest possible MG.

@Salesman9001 my problem with Chauchat here is that 1)it was made before mass introduction of welding and increase in quality of stamping both of which would have helped lower prices further; 2)it's long recoil. With gas system. Not something you'd call cheap and simple; 3)it's borderline LMG at best. Battle rifle/automatic rifle on most accounts instead. The interest is primarily born out of "what can partisans come up with and produce?" It's simpler with pistols, bolt actions and SMGs, we have a lot of examples of those. But here it's only Chauchat, Besal(I've heard Dror also had undergone simplification, but the goal wasn't to make a cheaper gun though) and maybe some conversions like Huot(which will require adaptation to specific captured rifle types). But at least for french resistance if they'd finally decided to go serious on levels of yugoslavs and poles, Chauchat would have been a best option considering it's already a french design. However Chauchat was never updated in my memory after it's two botched attempts at WWI. And then Ian releases this video. About exactly that, updated Chauchat.
