I'm no expert in geopolitics, but if NATO didn't continue to expand towards Russia, then Russia wouldn't be afraid of NATO, and NATO wouldn't have needed to face off against Russia or deter Russia in any way. If NATO coordinated its expansion with Russia's knowledge and approval, would they be locked in indirect conflict today? The conflict seems to be both sides afraid of each other rather than any real danger to each other Neither side wants war but they keep scaring the other side and pushing each other into a corner
