I noticed the JA monopoly symbol on that package. Strawberries are kept artificially high in price in Japan and don't have to be. Many people in Japan can't eat them because they are actually quite expensive. JA will not allow strawberry seeds to be sold in stores here. I have seen Oishi Barries ($8 to $12 for eight strawberries) in the states several years ago when they first started up. I think they raise their strawberries hydroponically. JA prevents strawberry seeds from being sold in Japan as well as most other seeds if not approved. I raise strawberries in my small back room here in Tokyo in hydroponics towers. The flowers just started blooming so I will have around 108 strawberry plants fruiting here soon. I germinated seeds I took off strawberries I bought here last year.

@hannesRSA Most of the strawberries grown get tossed. They pick only the best off the vines to sell at higher prices. Big strawberry growers make money hand over fist inviting the public into their farms to pick and eat all the strawberries they want for an hour at about ¥1,600 to ¥2,000.
