I highly doubt china is going to actually break apart. This is pure copium coming from someone who clearly is insecure about the rise of china. Though giving him the benefit of the doubt, it might be a figure of speech, a 'warlord period' might mean competing factions inside the CCP actively struggling over the direction where the country should go without it actually devolving to civil war.

the 'alternative' is a balkanisation of the chinese state and mass suffering like the russians experienced at the fall of the USSR (at best) or another civil war. thats why no chinese person seriously objects to the rule of the CCP.

@AbeYousef This will never happen because the US has made it an explicit policy to never allow another country or coalition of countries democractic or not to overtake it in power. The US actively interferes with EU countries and was arguably behind Brexit and Definately behind the faisco in ukraine and syria which greatly weakened the EU.

local bureaucrats in china are for the most part democratically elected, weeding out the bad actors and underperformers is essential for the party to function at the higher levels because thats where they get their candidates for higher offices.

keep in mind this was a time before anyone understood the idea of nuclear winter. China at the time was also highly rural meaning you couldn't realistically nuke every square inch of it so the majority of the population was expected to survive.

Tell that to the countless authoritarian states that survived for centuries as absolute monarchies. Maybe the next leader after Xi retires will be less authoritarian but under the constant pressure from the west, china has no choice but to embrace a siege mentality.

a so called 'warlord period' doesn't mean china is going to fracture, its like the '4th turning' in the US. political turmoil but by no means a guarentee for state collapse.

No because taiwan is less than 100km from the mainland and can park any number of foreign military forces there. Its a geostrategic risk for china.

@David35687 No Mao did do some of the groundwork like land reform, peasant literacy and establishing the basis for industrialisation. Not to mention develop china's nuclear arsenal to ensure that china never 'realistically' could get invaded again.

@hoppingshark7676 History has also demonstrated that democracies ultimately fall to populism and 'strongmen' when inevitably the population gets too divided. Without the CCP the majority ethnic Han will simply elect their own version of Trump. Any attempts at seperatism by the tiny minorities will go about as well as CHAZ or black nationalist movements in the US. Can't innovate? Why do people still believe this in 2021? China is rising fast up the innovation index

there would be a debate between the pan green who'd want formal independence and the pan blue who wants to intervene and take back the mainland. And nothing would happen because taiwan is an irrelevant power with regards to the mainland.
