When Renee mentioned smoking and taking it up because your peers smoked, this reminded me of something my Ukrainian wife went through.But with a post-Soviet twist - when the Soviet Union collapsed in the early nineties, my wife had to take up smoking to get in with the right work group of seniors to advance her career at the university she worked oat. I now this sounds crazy, but it's what she had to do to be bale to hang out with them outside during smoke breaks and build connections. She's since given up smoking long ago thank God and, she's an associate Professor now. But how stupid was that ? Taking up smoking to get in with the right crowd for your career. Only in the former Soviet Union could some stupid nonsense like that pan out! I sometimes joked with her, lucky it wasn't a mid-morning break, vodka drinking group which was typical in the late USSR during Brezhnev's time and later. 🥛🚬🚭
