Comments by "" (@pwillis1589) on "Barnaby Joyce calls on government to ‘remove the prohibition’ on nuclear" video.
Joyce had 9 years in government to do it. What happened?

No need. All that is needed is the Libs and the Nats legislate to remove the legislation they put in place in the first place. Labor had nothing to do with it.

@johnwoodrow8769 I didn’t say it would be easy only that it is all that is required. The LNP had 9 years in government and never even tried. Now that what Labor to introduce the legislation even though it’s not Labor policy. The Libs need to do the work, get elected and take responsibility themselves. You don’t need bipartisan support at all, you just need a majority in the Parliament. If the Libs can’t get a majority then it’s not what the people of Australia want. That’s why we call it a representative democracy.

@johnwoodrow8769 while I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you, you must realise that the days of governments in Australia owning infrastructure are long gone. We just spent the last 50 years selling it all off (rightly or wrongly). I do find it odd that small government Libs want to build, own, and run a nuclear power industry and big government Labor want to let the market decide. You can’t seriously expect the National electricity grid to be nationalised or are you?

@johnwoodrow8769 They NEVER even tried. Reference for me the legislation they brought before the parliament. It is a nonsensical argument to be in government for 9 years and attempt nothing and then in opposition complain the current government won’t. Why should it? It isn’t Labor policy.

@davegoldspink5354 My understanding was it was the Democrats and the Greens but either way along with Victoria many other states also have prohibited nuclear infrastructure. Labor are not going to join the party, so it’s going to be a long hard struggle for the Libs to get legislation through the federal and state parliaments.

@davegoldspink5354 We disagree on renewables, but agree on the difficulty of getting nuclear up and going. I have no problems with the safety and reliability of nuclear power, only the cost. The AMEO plan is to firm the grid with gas which is a lot cheaper and easier than going nuclear. By the way the sun shines 24/7 endlessly and the wind blows constantly as the air pressure always varies between the land and the ocean. It is how our planet works.

@alexandermenzies9954 Fossil fuels receive $billions in subsidies as well so the argument renewables do just doesn’t cut it. CSIRO Gencost and LAZARDs LCOE studies both clearly show renewables are significantly cheaper in producing electricity. Happy for you to cite a study that shows nuclear power cheaper than solar.
