  1.  @buildmotosykletist1987  Yes I see what you mean. I didn’t realise the time it took to build an Astute compared to a Virginia which is as you said less than half the time.

The jap sub as presented to cabinet had the range of about as far as I can hit a golf ball and had no long range missiles capability. It was the weakest of the three options. Abbott was keen about it for every reason other than it’s capability or effectiveness as a weapons system.

  3.  @buildmotosykletist1987  Yeah it was. I was obviously being a bit flippant. The Soryu class is a good submarine, but the Attack class had 3x the range of the Soryu and also had cruise missile capabilities. The Soryu only has harpoon. The Soryu would have done the job no doubt.

  4.  @buildmotosykletist1987  Not really the two main things I remember were the range and weapons differences. The attack class was much bigger as well. If we started mucking around with the Soryu it may have had the same issues as the attack. We should have stuck with one or the other and then simultaneously run with a nuc.

  9.  @buildmotosykletist1987  Yes you are right it is far more probable we will go with the Virginia class. Latest events though may even prove that to be extremely problematic.

  10. There is a hugely significant difference between a conventionally powered sub, which we can build easily and have done so and a nuclear powered sub which we have never built. It’s not impossible but extremely difficult. Even the US is having problems increasing its fleet of subs.

  11.  @buildmotosykletist1987  Personally I think we will end up going with the UK Astute class, not necessarily because it is better just because it is logistically easier.
