  1. Because the fossil fuel industry lied to successive governments that there would be more than enough gas for the local market. Secondly when government attempted to tax gas the fossil fuel industry successfully lobbied against it. Essentially Australia gives its gas to the fossil fuel industry for free. No gas company pays any corporate tax either.
