@Smooshes786 now I understand something : this happened in Europe till ww2. But we are speaking about the arranged marriages where the daughter got her properties (dowry) from her parents. The virginity thing was a health matter, not having sexual diseases, and an integrity and authority matter (not to come with bastards). If she wasn't a virgin (even accidentally), she could have been sent back home in shame. But the situation of her dowry was legally very regulated.
The mean of control was... the signature of the parents for the legal underage marriages (arranged). The girls could be married at 16 yo. If they said no to the arranged marriage, because loving someone refused by her family, they had to run away with the man of their choice, losing everything : family and personal wealth. They had to run to a city where the young man had a job, them becoming poor housewives (which is worse in my opinion). Or to run even to the America's for the young men to escape prison for seducing an underage. The parents refused to give their signatures for the legal underage marriage and asked for the young men to be sent to jail. That's why siblings having the same mother and father could have their mother 's family name, the elderly born when the mother could not marry, and the youngest their father' s family name, after their mother had the age of legal marriage. And it would have been better for them if those relationships were successful. Because if not they could only become prostitutes, which was legal. Their families would never forgive or save them, even not their own grandchildren. They would let them all die in the ditch. For the yeomanry who 's not of them is literally of the ditch.
In my opinion was better to marry at that time because if it did not work they could get a divorce and have back their personal wealth in the legal conditions.
In the present time the personal property is completed by education so the number of arranged marriages is extremely reduced.

The only solution against brainwashing and indoctrination is the learning of the freedom of thinking and critical thinking, which is very difficult. I would recommend the excellent book of Natasha Kampusch, who was never a victim, never thought and acted like a victim, no Stockholm syndrome. She was abducted of the streets, as a very young child and kept prisoner in abominable conditions. She always called her tormentor "the perpetrator". Her book may be important also for the persons living in authoritarian systems. She fought to survive, not to die of starvation and neglecting, fought to humanize herself, to keep learning the same things like the normal children of her generation and to keep her social skills.
The turning point happened when she realized that it was her life against the life of the perpetrator. And she decided to escape, even if this would have killed him, and to return to her loving family, to her freedom and rights, to the normal world and society and to her own future.
