If Putin can achieve his military objective and remain in power, he can achieve satisfaction by simply enduring.
He likely prefers an iron curtain with less democratic influence in Russia and secure borders with intimidated unarmed neutral states. He prefers castrated Russian oligarchs. By standing apart in the upcoming struggle between China and the West he has great markets and influence for his resources and political leanings. Putin will be comforted that he tested the West and they did not respond.
He has many more options now.
The West, after picking up the pieces, applying the balm of charity and adjusting to the lower aspirations of the border states will pat itself on the back, relax, hook up to Russian and Ukranian resources and life will go on. They must prepare for the dragon.
The question, whether NATO "allies" will defend each other militarily will remain. This question poses an expensive problem for Europe states. To remain passive unarmed and protected by a questionable United States? Or to actually defend themselves? Likely the former.
The upcoming competition is in the east. The fewer military resources they have the less they will be called out of their sheltered position in the West to combat the dragon.
All in all, Putin and Western Europe come out of this quite well.
A pretty impressive & cruel strategic gamble by Putin. He probably wants to live forever.
The US has an upside as well. It acted passively, not opposing the reorganization of Europe's Eastern flank. This realization, will simplify its protection commitments and allow it to concentrate on the threat of the dragon. Militarily, Europe is on its own.
The US no longer has the Europe ownership interest of the Dulles brothers, Marshall &, Kennedy. It will consolidate and point toward protecting the Eastern Pacific.
