Explain the mistruths.

"Us"? So you were responsible for the concentration camps in South Africa, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, were you? It was you who exerted colonial powers to maintain control over their territories and suppress resistance, was it? Ah the numptiness of nationalism!

Have you looked at the programme for the Last Night? Finnish conductor, American singer, music from American, Italian, French, and African-American composers. If you don't like the international dimension of this concert, and the entire festival, if you don't like Henry Wood's commitment to extending the reach of classical music across ages and countries, then you hate Britain's inclusiveness. But still you stay here!

@FC-PeakVersatility And patriotism is, in the words of Samuel Johnson, the last refuge of a scumbag.

@FC-PeakVersatility Well if you were really so cultured, you would know that the actual quote from the Dictionary of 1755 was patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel . I just played with the last word in the knowledge that anyone steeped in English culture would know what I had done. But then you are clearly paddling in the shallow end.

So would one of over 1,100 people that can answer this question: what exactly did she say that would justify an arrest warrant for hate speech ?

BBC Proms 2024 has 90 concerts with 3,000 musicians. Sorry to break it to you, but most of the music, many of the artists, choirs, and orchestras are not British.

@FC-PeakVersatility A right-wing British nationalist view that seeks to narrowly define the BBC Proms as a symbol of exclusive British identity is fundamentally at odds with the inclusive and diverse values of British society. The Proms, as a celebration of classical music in a global nation, embody a rich tradition of cultural exchange and international collaboration, reflecting the broader, more open values that truly represent Britain.

@jimthomson101 Just because you think you are superior, doesn't make it so, just as a mongrel cannot think itself a pedigree.

@FC-PeakVersatility How does making the BBC Proms only about British identity fit with Britain’s history of being open and sharing culture with other countries? If the BBC Proms focused only on British identity, how might that change the festival’s role in celebrating classical music from around the world and Britain’s image as a welcoming, diverse nation?

The Last night is a Proms tradition, it is not a British tradition. It celebrates and takes an ironic stance toward Britain and Britishness, but you "radical conservatives" will not dictate how people celebrate . A right-wing British nationalist view that seeks to narrowly define the BBC Proms as a symbol of exclusive British identity is fundamentally at odds with the inclusive and diverse values of British society. The Proms, as a celebration of classical music in a global nation, embody a rich tradition of cultural exchange and international collaboration, reflecting the broader, more open values that truly represent Britain.

@johnsmith-eh3yc almost exclusively . Fair point, but it is a party to end 90 concerts (I’ve only been to one concert this season: Britten's War Requiem). On the point of patriotic songs, would you consider Blake's Jerusalem to be patriotic? Peter Marshall's interpretation suggests that while it can be viewed as patriotic, this patriotism is not about celebrating England as it was, but about envisioning what England could become through spiritual and moral regeneration. It is a critique of contemporary society as much as it is a call for national renewal. Thus, Marshall sees Blake's "Jerusalem" as a complex and potentially subversive text that challenges simple nationalist interpretations.
