@mancubwwa The shells coming down at a steep angle have to be significantly more accuratly aimed to get a hits. Thus while they have an easier route in far more will miss. Adding velocity to a conventional Naval gun both improves penetration and increased the error in ranging that will still allow a hit. As for the USofA's superheavy projectiles I have mentioned before my belief that the senior officers at the USofA Navy's BuOrd of the 1930s should have been shot.

When projectiles pass through armor at an angle the change of the direction of the projectile in in the direction that changes the angle towards 90 degrees unless the armor has a really localized weakness present which British armor has never shown signs of. It is a significantly less likely to be correct theory.

No. When a projectile penetrates an armor plate its course changes towards going in at a 90 degree angle to the plate. With the Hood's sloped armor the deflection would be upwards. It confuses the hel out of me as to why but your theory runs counter to how things work in the real world.

@buzzardbeurling Your statement does not match reality. No matter how thin or soft thel armor it will alter the direction of travel of the penatrator in the manner I described.

The bloody huge explosion caused the ship to ring like a bell dazing the crew and it takes time to climb out of the bowels of the ship.

@timothyschmidt9566 Something can be very good and be of suboptimal design which means they could have been much better. The flatter trajectory means that for a larger portion of the flight the projectile will hit the target this also means that for guns aimed to exactly the same accuracy difference in the distance to where they hit the ocean surface is larger at the same time as you get an increased chance of getting hits. They are firing at a vertical target not a horizontal target. The distance that the shell covers while between 20 meters above the surface and impacting with the surface much greater so you have a greater chance of getting a hit.

Now we just have to find out which of Hood's crew member pissed off Tyche.

The new firecontrol system might have given Hood hits on the Bismarck damaging the Bismarck's firecontrol and thus denying Bismarck the fatal hit. Unlikely but so was the fatal hit.

@ahabeger Doing so would add a great deal of complication to fire control, reduce the penetration, and decrease the odds of getting hits.

@spookynikki907 A series of airtight armored hatches arranged so that you always have a closed hatch between the magazines and the gun deck so that a fireball on the gun deck cannot reach the magazine.
