I have often said that the Japanese would have been better off bombing the machine shops, cranes, and supply depots rather than the ships themselves.

@MrBITS101 Bombing the tank farms would have been a waste of bombs. The USofA would have had replaced the fuel before the fires went out and refueling ships directly from a tanker would have been only a minor annoyance. The USofA was the biggest oil exporter in the world at the time.

@johnfisher9692 Japan intended to declare war before the attack. USofA intelligence decoded the message from the Japanese government to the Japanese Embassy instructing the Diplomat do declare war in time to give a warning the Embassy's decoding equipment malfunctioned delaying the delivery of the declaration. Apparently the Japanese government not having a plan to win the war on the ground wanted to avoid a sneak attack while negotiating so that they would be able to negotiate an end to the war that let them keep the oil field they intended to take.

@WALTERBROADDUS They had the wrong bombs because they were attacking the wrong targets.

@WALTERBROADDUS Warehouses and machine shops are easy targets for bombers and shipyard cranes are not small and easy enough to strafe with 20mm fire.

@marrvynswillames4975 The ammo is only important if the ships are capable of moving. Which is the point of destroying the maintenance equipment.

@WALTERBROADDUS Taking out a tank farm is easy, rupture the tanks and provide an ignition source. But attacking oil stores of the world's largest oil exporter is not particularly useful; shiploads of replacement fuel would be arriving before the fires were put out.
