When launching planes the others were on the aft deck. When recovering planes the others were placed on the forward deck to make room for the landing.

@jonny-b4954 The rivets were hammered tight while red hot and shrank while they cooled making the seam tighter. Iron oxide is larger than just iron so when a bit of rust forms between the plates the seam gets tighter. Paint helps keep water from getting between the plates as well. But a very large number of photos of these ships show them dumping significant amounts of water overboard. Welding is clearly more watertight as well as stronger and lighter but it allows cracks to propagate over much larger areas.

@scottgiles7546 The radiation has decayed to safe levels. They never actually glowed in the dark if they had they would not be safe to dive on for more generations.

Would it have been faster to convert fast passenger liners into fast oilers and support ship or to build them from scratch?
