The American admirals were not offing each other over their differences, unlike a certain opposing Navy.

@transmaster The. Japanese Army would not have attacked the USofA while fighting the war in China. They were already over extended and knew it.

@scottgiles7546 True but this was about the carrier v battleship debate.

Slower than Standard Battleships? Wow that's slow. 😏

@ramal5708 The USofA Navy not getting the money to build entire battleship squadrons of the same class decided to make a set of standards for battleship design so that different classes of battleships would work well together. 21 kts was not absurdly slow when it was decided and it did allow the very heavy armor and guns on the ships of comparable tonnage to their contemporaries. It also helped keep older reciprocating engine battleships relevant to the front line role. Really they stuck with 21 kts a little long.

@Adeline-fm They used a emergency order gun that was superficially identical but weaker than the standard 6-pdr and required special low pressure ammunition that was externally identical to standard 6-pdr ammo. The Royal Navy was real glad to get rid of the guns.

@gregorywright4918 There is lots of oil in Siberia, the Japanese had curb stomped Russia not too long before and Russia was also at war with Germany. It makes a bit of difference.

@espada9 After the American lead Alliance had completely crushed the Japanese empire. The outcome of invading Russia instead of attacking American interests could have been significantly different. Unlike the Nazis, Japan knew how to use a puppet government in Conquered territories.

@consubandon The bubble heads were trusted to do bubble head things that were useful but by the 30s weren't seen as a threat to funding for either carriers or battleships unlike they were for each other.

@consubandon Which is entirely expected given the subject matter of the changing surface warfare battle doctrine. Until the introduction of nuclear powered boats submarines were not an important issue battle doctrine because they were too slow to keep up making them a nasty course hazard to watch out for and cheep Commerce suppression.

@consubandon But it was the change in policies leading to the USofA's global domination. Aside from capability of boats and torpedoes there is damned little difference in USofA's anti-Japan submarine warfare in WWII and Germany's anti-UK submarine warfare.
