  1. Unless all you want is coastal defense nuclear-powered subs are the way to go. As an American I of course hope that when your government comes to it senses it buys the current production American nuclear-powered subs but I do understand that requirements differ and another country's subs may suit Australia's needs better and say that the purchase price should even must include space at the country's navies reactor operator schools for your reactor operator crews even if it means that they have to learn to speak French.
