That is one of the drawbacks of these aluminum engine blocks. The last guy that put the tensioner on may have slightly cross threaded and it tightened just fine for him. Next guy pulls the bolt out and has the situation of messed up threads, all too common. I just hope that old motor is worth all you are doing to it. You're the mechanic here, but if I had the engine out, I would pull the heads and all, clean all the carbon, sludge and what not and have new head gaskets at least. Who am I, maybe it doesn't need it, but I always said, if you are going to be a bear, be a grizzly. Nice job you are doing, I can't wait to hear it run.
