@lturange how does that disprove the points he was making? Those were different conflicts at different times for different reasons that had no bearing whatsoever on what happened on the Falklands in 1982? aside, I guess from their having the same countries involved, but if you're going down that road should we still hate the present-day Italians because of Julius Caesar invading Ancient Britain in 55bc?

More specifically, at least two reliably-working carriers, with actual planes on them, not just helicopters, British-owned and British-flown planes at that, and not supposedly state-of-the-art carriers easily stopped in their tracks by a single propshaft coupling failing

Understandable, but to those who were actually there it's basically like Britain & Argentina's version of Vietnam, and all the politics aside it was still a terrible experience as many of those who fought there came back with scars invisible to the eye, and it's still a very big deal to them and their families; and yeah it's a smaller-scale shorter war than most major-power modern conflicts, and was definitely an easier time overall for the British, but we're still talking thousands of people here a long way from home, fighting in some of the coldest most miserable conditions imaginable with relatively modern weapons, and with civilians under occupation caught in the middle

That's your opinion and one you're entitled to, but the established fact is that they ARE British territory and, unlike with Russia and Ukraine, that's what the people who actually call the islands home say, not some damn foriegn dictator with delusions of bringing back dead empires

@RoderickTheRed there's oil there yeah and huge POTENTIAL for wealth from it as you say, but in case you haven't noticed Britain isn't doing so well financially right now AND is facing an energy crisis from the whole Ukraine & Russia thing just like the rest of Europe, DESPITE owning those islands; getting rights to the land or water the oil's under is always a lot easier then actually getting the oil itself out, at least in sufficient quantities to be profitable, just ask the North Sea oil-rig companies

@RoderickTheRed as for thinking the war was really about oil, not the land itself or the people living there, if you truly believe that you've clearly never spoken to an Argentinian about the subject- while they certainly like the idea of getting that oil along WITH the islands, the islands themselves are always the first thing to them with the oil just being a kind of added bonus. Remember in the 70's and 80's there was just THEORETICALLY massive oil-wealth there but with no actual oil-drilling infrastructure, the Falklanders were a bunch of poor tenant-farmers raising sheep and horses not rich Texan-style oil-barons, and while the industry there is more about tourism and holidays and catering to the military garrison these days it still certainly isn't all about gas and oil there. The war was a real throwback in a way, as it truly wasn't about resources or Capitalism versus Communism, but just about territory, principle, pride, patriotism, internal politics and just plain war for war alone's sake. Argentina wanting (and still wanting) land they believed we'd "stolen" from them "back" (with of course the ulterior motives for the Junta of distracting the Argentine people from domestic troubles and uniting them in common cause), and the UK retaliating against it's sovereign territory being invaded and occupied for the first time in decades if not centuries (depends what you consider British sovereign territory doesn't it), with of course Thatcher also having the ulterior motives of her own of rallying the people behind her and likewise distracting them from their domestic issues, along with perhaps the chance of bringing some lost glory back to a fading power; but still, for neither side it was never really about the oil

Good luck with that lol, if the modern Britain gives up any more land we're gonna be doing it for our own reasons on our own terms, we're done kowtowing and backing down to the rest of the world when if it wasn't for us they'd either not exist or not be free to. And if the UN doesn't like that, too bad, suck it up, they talk and talk but couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag on their own

@XXXTENTAClON227 weak and stupid government after weak and stupid government trying to save money by reducing a navy they didn't see as very important in the modern world, it's stupid and a crying shame but blame our government administrations as I say not the Royal Navy or Britain as a whole. Still, we do have two carriers now that're easily the biggest, most modern and most powerful (on paper) in Europe, they just have had various issues as detailed above that really need ironing out (trust me if they were ever needed for something like the Falklands again though I'm sure the whip would get cracked and they WOULD be ready in time)

@mauromodica8293 the sinking was not illegal, controversial yes but not illegal, we did give warning well in advance both directly and through the UN that we could and would attack any Argentine military aircraft or warship we encountered that posed a threat to our forces (and Belgrano and her escorting destroyers definitely did pose a threat and were one arm of a pincer movement aimed at flanking our taskforce). She was liable to be attacked regardless of her position, the maritime exclusion zone wasn't actually a legal boundary to such actions just something to MOSTLY restrict where the fighting was happening and keep civilians and neutrals out

@mauromodica8293 as for the bombs some exploded some didn't, some hit some missed, wup-dee-doo, even if they'd all exploded it still wouldn't have meant you'd won or even that the ships you hit were actually sunk, to completely defeat us you would've had to successfully hit and destroy at least 40 warships not four, and in particular our two aircraft carriers which your aircraft never even got NEAR with those bombs let alone sunk, despite your pilot's claims; AND even if you HAD somehow sunk more ships it wouldn't have changed the outcome of the land campaign

@mauromodica8293 oh yeah and frankly we don't give a damn what some obscure "international organisation" says, those islands simply ARE staying British until the people who actually live there say otherwise and that's final, you're welcome to come visit but NOT to lay claim to anything or try and start a fight again, otherwise you'll be politely but firmly shown the door on no uncertain terms
