  2.  @reecedignan8365  yep, it's a matter of the circumstances at the time, the terrain and whether your enemy is using the same weapons and tactics and has similar numbers. There's also a REASON modern soldiers still carry bayonets and other close-combat weapons, not neccessarilly for fixing to their rifles and charging with but so that they're not helpless at close-range if they become overwhelmed or run out of ammo, something that can make a soldier equipped with even the most devastating of heavy automatic weapons suddenly at a disadvantage. If the British troops at Isandylwana had had Gatling Guns or something similar they'd certainly have stood a chance- but if the thousands of Zulus had kept coming and they kept on blazing away those guns would jam or run out

  3. If the other side is using the same tactics and using the same weapons, with roughly the same levels of accuracy and rate of fire, and virtually everyone WAS at the time it makes perfect sense to fight this way

  4. Like he said rifles might have been more accurate but they could still only fire one shot at a time and took nearly twice as long to reload, and were far more expensive and complex to make in large numbers

  5. Volley fire might not work as a concept in modern combat with modern weapons involved but it sure as hell worked then, especially for the British while fighting defensively in line. Superior training meant they could do it faster, higher-calibre musket balls meant they could hit harder and superior discipline meant they could hold their formations better, even under heavy artillery bombardment or cavalry attack. And while the main infantry regiments WERE, both literally and figuratively haha, 'holding the line', our own light infantry, including, of course the famous riflemen, the 'Greenjackets', with their Baker Rifles would stay in cover or on the flanks and make short work of any opposing 'Voltiguers' trying to pick off the stationary line of Redcoats

  6. No idea what the hell that guy was talking about with the square formation being 'useless', tell that to Ney's French cavalry at Waterloo, sure you couldn't move easily while doing it but you weren't supposed to
