@rimmipeepsicles1870 he's joking mate 😊 but yep

@albundy9597 oh well EXCUUUSE ME!!! If this was a video about the USS Constitution, the comments would be full of Americans saying the exact same things about 'their' ship. OF COURSE I didn't fucking personally build her you idiot, doesn't mean I can't be proud of my country, it's history and of her
16
Absolutely beautiful, makes you incredibly proud to be British and proud to have not only produced such an awesome ship but to have preserved her for over two centuries. Fantastic video, my favourite so far 😊

Shouldn't be a surprise actually haha given having a bar on board is actually a traditional Royal Navy requirement as is each man getting a specific ration of rum a day
3
By the standards of the time she was

That area WOULD be your best bet for getting Age Of Sail ships though, tracking down the full-sized replica ones, after all the ones that ARE a real full-sized working ship (like 'Grand Turk' used in that show for HMS Indefatigable) are not only actually still fully seaworthy and able to fire their guns, unlike a real 200-year-old ship (with Constitution being the sole exception there), but will likely have modern creature comforts aboard and engines for emergency use, AND will still outwardly look the part
2
@Jon.A.Scholt OR haha if you could find it there's the full-sized replica second-rate they used for HMS Renown in the 'Hornblower' TV series, which unlike Victory would still actually be able to sail about haha
2
Well you do have 'Old Ironsides', USS Constitution
2
Yeah the upgunned frigate with 24-pounder guns maximum against the fully-armed just as fast ship of the line with 32-pounders and equally iron-like sides, definitely gonna go Constitution's way, sure 🙄
2
Agreed, guess people were just built tougher back then
2
He says at the end, they are indeed working on that problem, it's why the masts were removed (hopefully temporarily as it spoils her looks) and all those extra bracing struts and stuff at her bottom were added
2
Standard daily rum ration perhaps haha
2
@DeltaStar777 for a Ship Of The Line 11 knots was damn fast mate, some frigates would struggle to overtake her at that speed
2
@albundy9597 well agreed on the ship part at least
2
@kartezparks5505 on her Quarter-Deck then
1
@neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 oh ok fair enough 🙂
1
*Hind and don't think he has yet no, soon hopefully
1
Well thankyou very much for his service then
1
@sarjim4381 you also, actually as an official naval requirement got a daily ration of strong alcohol, usually rum or grog in pretty generous quantities, so that must've helped take the edge off haha
1
@sarjim4381 as for the living conditions aboard, wouldn't have been that bad once you got used to it I don't think, everyone after all was quite literally in the same boat after all (groan haha) and it'd certainly make you get on well with the men you spent the time living and working in such close proximity with out of sheer necessity; your crew would basically become your family, to all intents and purposes, and the ship would become your home
1
@Jon.A.Scholt well we have hardly any more recent ships ourselves, all our big battleships are gone for example, closest thing we have left is the cruiser HMS Belfast (well unless you count the British-built Japanese pre-dreadnought Misaka)
1
@Jon.A.Scholt so yeah let's trade old warships shall we lol. No other Ships Of The Line but we do have a couple of preserved frigates of our own as well
1
@sarjim4381 as for modern Millenial-types they wouldn't last five minutes back then
1
@Jon.A.Scholt oh, bollocks, sorry, scratch that, just looked it up, they used models for the wide-shots and a combination of mock-ups and HMS Victory for the close-ups, had just assumed since the other ships on that show were real that one was too
1
@sarjim4381 yep, oh don't get me wrong life at sea in the Royal Navy was no picnic but at least you knew you'd GET food, and it might not have exactly been gourmet fare or a particularly varied diet but at least it was something both officers and ordinary sailors for the most part shared in common (yeah the officers would get better food for a while after a re-supply like fresh meat, bread and vegetables but this would soon go off or run out, then it was back to the salted-meat and ship's biscuit/hard-tack everyone else was already living off). As for the harsh discipline and brutal punishments at least everyone knew the rules, everyone knew exactly where they stood and orders were carried out obediently, quickly, thoroughly and efficiently by all aboard as a result, which tended to be more than you can say for their opposite numbers on the French and Spanish ships lol

@Jon.A.Scholt if only real original stuff will do though, tell you what how about Ironclads haha, how's HMS Warrior sound 😁
1
@Jon.A.Scholt well she sounds amazing and well sounds like a perfectly good arnament, one relatively heavy gun able to fire in all directions instead of lots of smaller ones only able to fire in one; bet that's how her original inspiration was able to get the better of her British counterparts haha, combined with speed and good seamanship. Sounds a lot like a smaller version of the fortress swivel-cannons at Fort George in fact, a huge fortress built in the Jacobean era and now preserved as a museum I've been to

Known as the 'head' in sailor jargon for some reason
