Under octavius the romans had 300k soldiers and never used more than half of that in a single campaign and never used more than 80k in a single battlefield, they divided them in many armies for cover more land. I disagree with german been strict and militarist due to 30 years war. Id point that character came from Prussia, and Prussia got it from the teutonic crusaders. Maybe is something deeper in german culture, swiss mercenaries, lanksnetchs, the swed soldiers... would have a similar mindset.
