The reason they differentiate between male and female for this occasion is because she was used a test subject to see how the human body would react to long duration in space, we have a lot of that data on males already. We even have that data on male twins. But we don't have that on women yet, which is why this is so significant, this data is vital if humans want to colonize space, especially with these plans that the US and China have for sending people to Mars or establishing a permanent space station around the moon. Men and Women maybe similar in many respects but we are still different biologically and thus our bodies react differently to the environment.
