If the UK had ignored the green movement (like France) and continued to modernise its nuclear capacity we would be in a far better position to meet the challenges we face today. We used to run eleven Magnox reactors, just replacing these on a one for one basis with Sizewell B equivalent stations would provide over 40% of our electrical power requirements.

Possibly, but it will be years before thorium reactors make any meaningful contribution. Too much political and safety baggage to overcome.

@Robert_DeVille That's not an easy question to answer. There is much that could be done to improve the performance of renewables (molten salt storage capacity for one) to even out their supply. Traditional nuclear has relied on a small number of large reactors running at full capacity to provide even base load. This is not necessarily going to be the case going forward and newer technologies allow for smaller reactors with the capacity to "load follow" What this means is that it will become much easier to run nuclear and renewable energy in a more synergistic fashion. Another important feature of the newer Gen IV reactors is their ability to run at higher operating temperatures. This gives them the ability to both generate electricity and to provide direct heat for industrial production and space heating. As a direct answer to your question though, the peak (electrical) energy demand for the UK (~38GWe) could be met by 32 reactors of the size of Sizewell B.
