For operations in shallow coastal waters diesel-electric boats are superior owing to their generally smaller size and lower noise signature. However, in Australia's case the switch to nuclear propulsion makes perfect sense given the area of ocean they need to cover to protect their trade lanes.

  2. It's not either/or, go for a mix. There is huge potential for solar generation in Aus, either PV or collection based. Combine that with molten salt storage and you have a mostly reliable power system. Back that up with molten salt based nuclear and you are 100% clean energy capable.
