@johnstevens213 You are wrong. For the record the USS Virginia was laid down in September 1999 and commissioned in October 2004. HMS Astute was laid down in January 2001 but not commissioned until August 2010. They are therefore contemporaneous in design.

Yes

Lol. It is an attack sub not a boomer. Muppet.

Michael Pezzullo Flying a few old Harriers they bought from us (as your Marine Corp did btw)? Your own navy admit that they like having a Type 45 with them for air cover as it has superior radar to the Burke.

To be honest I think the Aussies will go with a US boat for practical reasons.
2
@saltymonke3682 Practical reason that the UK does not have the capacity to build more boats for Australia and they will have to wait a long time before the infrastructure and expertise is in place to build nukes themselves.
2
There are no Astute's for them to buy, so you are talking nonsense
2
Michael Pezzullo Do you have that comment on copy and paste?
2
Michael Pezzullo You do have it on copy and paste.

This is not part of the nuclear deterrent

@Highendaudio1 Isn't that what I said? There is more chance (though still low) that US yards could construct a few extra boats than the UK.
1
@saltymonke3682 The UK yard does not have the trained staff to increase construction numbers.
1
@saltymonke3682 They have zero experience constructing SSN's
1
@saltymonke3682 Agreed, but it takes time and personnel to train them. With a much smaller trained workforce ourselves, that is not going to be easy. I wish we could. I wish we could build another three of four for ourselves too.

No.

@bremnersghost948 Exactly. This is a strategic signal. If they wanted to look at Anson they would have just sent a sub.
1
@awolf391 What bomber is that?
1
@thewishmastur Actually, you cannot. Your yards are full.
1
@iracingrookie3301 They are funded for an eleven year build, they could have been built faster.
1
@iracingrookie3301 Agreed, although I doubt the kit installed on Anson is exactly the same as that originally fitted to Astute. Ships (and boats) do undergo periodic upgrades during maintenance and I expect (though I cannot say for sure obviously) that upgrades will have been fitted as standard to later boats. Take the US Virginia class for example. The boats began production two years before the Astute's, but the latest block V boats are a whole different beast to the original.
