I would like to see a land based version of Samson/Aster 30 to defend against possible cruise missiles, air or sea launched.

@Lewisloui Agreed.

Not wise if they are likely to fall into Russian hands.

@davidhouseman4328 You can, if you have AWACS up 24/7. What worries me is the surprise cruise missile strike on our radar sites from an SSGN. Even if they are detected there is no way that a QRA could be on station in time to intercept. Then we are blind and reliant upon NATO AWACS cover.

@Retrosicotte Not that simple, Stinger is multi-spectral.

@ScienceChap Then you know that it is the man and not the missile that you try to "counter" with a system like Starstreak. As for Stinger. Yes it is simple to use, but its seeker has come a long way since the "home onto the hottest spot" seekers of early days.

Thebossman I only said that it is not that simple to defeat Stinger with a flare.
2
Thebossman No worries mate.

No, reaffirming that the troops are there to defend Poland not attack Russia.

@davidhouseman4328 Let's be honest, even with NATO support and when we had our own E3s we never had 24/7 AWACs cover. A SAMSON co-located with our long range radar assets, linked to ASTER 30 and CAAM cells would give some hope of retaining radar coverage. Invulnerable? No, but one SSGN in the N Sea could hit all of our main search radars and airfield radars in one strike as it stands.

@davidhouseman4328 For the one scenario maybe not. However the additional range, performance and reach of the Sampson/Aster combination, along with its ballistic missile tracking capabilities, make it a serious upgrade over Sky Sabre alone.
